Microsoft Kojax

Microsoft has always been looking for ways to be back on track or conceiving concepts on how to win back developers to build applications with their tools. Although Microsoft is still the leader in OS and Office applications, a large number of developers from around the world are looking the other way.

Other programming languages are considered today and Ajax is definitely defeating every other programming language based on user experience. Microsoft’s Silverlight was able to sway some developers but they were never able to really reestablish themselves as a powerful competitor. Although Silverlight is able to come up with great updates, it will take time before Silverlight could put a dent on the popularity of Ajax.

But Microsoft is not giving up. Aside from Silverlight, something small yet remarkable is being developed by Microsoft. Most says that this programming language will be able to easily compete with Ajax once it comes to completion.

Microsoft has dubbed this project as Kojax – the name itself will already indicate that it is being developed to compete with Ajax. This programming technique will combine the features of Visual Studio and of course, JavaScript. The application built on Kojax will be able to run in Java.

Wait, if Kojax is being built to compete with an Ajax based application, why should it run in Java? The answer is the purpose of Kojax. This programming language is apparently not built to run Ajax like applications in computers, laptops and the same devices but on mobile phones. Microsoft is planning to build a programming language that should be able to build applications for small mobile devices.

What’s impressive about this programming language is that it is geared towards emerging mobile markets or countries that are using mobile devices with less processing power compared to those released in the US. That means mobile phones with smaller capacities are going to be the target platform of this programming language.

Because of its limited capacity, Kojax will be used for developing practical applications. Applications such as messaging and other essential online services and functions will be the focus of the programming language. Of course, mobile phones have to do their small part which is basically to have a small Java application that should be able to run the application. This is very challenging for Microsoft but if someone could do this, Microsoft will and hopefully it will come to fruition.

All of these are good news for developers worldwide. The bad news? No one really knows when Microsoft will release Kojax. What every tech blogger and Microsoft watcher knows is that Kojax is out there but the stage of development is not really known. Microsoft wants to keep it a secret and lucky for them (and bad for us), they are able to keep mum of the application.

But one thing is for sure: Kojax will be out in the near future and, when Microsoft releases this, Kojax should be able to become a viable programming language for mobile phones. Maybe this time, Microsoft should become a viable Ajax alternative even in mobile phones.
