Now with 3G is iPhone Ready for More Ajax?

Apple spread its wings to mobile communications when it released iPhone in June 2007. Enjoying more than 6 months of hype since it was introduced January of the same year, iPhone became every techies dream come true for a phone…except it doesn’t run on 3G.

The reason is simple: 3G technology requires more hardware compared when running a mobile phone without it. EDGE on the other hand requires little additional hardware. What even made iPhone remarkable compared to the rest of mobile devices is that it could easily implement Ajax. This web technology is one of the main features in iPhone making customer interaction with the device smoother compared to other mobile products.

However, iPhone is still considered a small player when compared to business-oriented mobile phones. iPhone is a robust mobile phone as it has all the office applications and browser which could give you an easy access to your email. It even has a WiFi that could connect you wirelessly to the internet when you don’t have EDGE.

Like its predecessor the iPod Video (Now iPod Classic), it can play videos as well as music. All of this could be done by an iPhone but this could also be done by different mobile phones for business and they have 3G capability. If you’re on the road, a mobile phone with 3G could easily beat iPhone when they try and access an Ajax based website.

Now that iPhone will be coming out with 3G probably June 2008, consumers who doubted the capability of iPhone will certainly take a second look of this mobile phone. With 3G iPhone could become a true mobile device as it could handle an Ajax based application or website.

To know how an iPhone can work with an Ajax based website, let us take a look at the specs. Inside every iPhone is a 620 MHz of CPU – better compared to other mobile devices and even when under-clocked in earlier versions, it still runs in a modest 412MHz. With this number you can safely say that iPhone should be able to handle an Ajax based application.

Another implication of 3G to iPhone when it comes to Ajax is on the developers. iPhone was able to release an SDK for developers so that they could come up with innovative applications for the mobile device. But Apple unfortunately limited its usage to registered and well known developers around the world. Independent coders would just have to wait until Apple change its mind. Judging from the popularity of iPhone, an open-SDK might not come in the coming years.

But there is an advantage of allowing only a limited number of software development companies to get their hands on an SDK. They can ensure quality and enhance security of the mobile phone.

The recent updates of iPhone have placed this mobile phone closer to robust Ajax based websites. Apple fans everywhere will surely love to place their hands on this product as soon as this is released for everyone to enjoy. Let’s just hope that its sole disadvantage is its price.
