The Wiki in Central Desktop

Central Desktop is an Ajax-based program that works like a Wikipedia only for business. This subscription based online software doesn’t need any installation from users and clients. All they need is a user name, password, a good PC and an internet connection in order to access the services of Central Desktop.

With the use Central Desktop, users and their respective clients can take a look at the document at the same time. It will also be possible for co-workers to collaborate on a project in real time at the comforts of their individual PC. When two workers and focusing on a project together without bothering each others tools, they can certainly work faster.

The idea of using Wikipedia for businesses is uncanny. Collaboration is possible but streamlining of information and decision making in businesses should also be emphasized. That’s why Central Desktop’s main clients are small to medium sized business. These companies can work together without having to go through different stages in decision making. There are also Fortune 500 companies that use this service however it’s only implemented in one of their departments. The though of using Wiki in business is purely for collaboration and not for large scale decision making. Ajax is a big part of this program since it makes sure that real time collaboration is possible between two users. It has been seen as the necessary tool that makes this process possible. According to Central Desktop’s CEO Isaac Garcia, “We've leveraged Web and Internet technology that is only recently become available to do these things. Only in the past three to five years has the browser been mature enough to handle heavy use of Ajax and JavaScript and DHTML to provide that desktop-like feel to whatever you want to do on the Web.” In short, nothing of this will happen if not for Ajax. Since this is an online tool aiming to be used in business, they have to offer a beefed up security. All the information created by a single user could only be accessed if he/she allowed it to. They can create customized access for their co-works and their clients. Their co-workers could access one thing, while the clients will be able to access information that’s important to them. Each of users will have their own password so that access of information could be customized according to the role of the user in that project. Using Ajax as their main platform for developing Central Desktop, they were able to create a Desktop-like experience in task management and collaboration. Aside from the ability to offer Wiki-like software, they have also added tools complementing Wiki. “On top of the wiki we've built lots of traditional collaboration tools like task lists, document management and ways to manage files. The tools we have created use Ajax to get that desktop like feel,’” said Garcia. Small to medium sized businesses will certainly enjoy this software. With the ability to work together with results in real time, business will be able to centralize their decision making and implement them faster.
