Zimbra and Xythos Finally in Partners

When Zimbra was acquired by Yahoo, it brings with it the ability to be integrated with various softwares called Zimlets. These programs are little Zimbra programs that provide even more functionality with the already popular Ajax-based program. As the open-source software is available in various universities, these programs are implemented with ever increasing “wish list” – people asking for more functionality. This Ajax-based program is revolutionary since they offer an alternative to Outlook and more.

With Zimlets, users will certainly enhance their experience. Zimbra alone may be able to get software popular but with the recent acquisition of Yahoo, it’s geared to be even something more. Just recently, Xythos announced that they are releasing a “Zimlet” for Zimbra users. Xythos is an internationally recognized company that specializes in storing securely your documents.

At the same time, they also offer collaboration so that files can be changed in real time. Their edge primarily is security of information, almost unrivaled by any organization. The company services the US Air Force lab in protecting their most important documents.

Members of the Air Force can easily access important information and work with others remotely and securely. Xythos has extended this service to Zimbra users. Once Xythos is integrated with Zimbra, users will be able to access their files securely and using Zimbra, they will be able to work with others in real time. This extension is basically labeled as “Digital Locker and Enterprise Document Management”.

Since this software is basically used in most universities in the country, this add-on is basically geared for students, professors and school administrators. Students will be able to access their assignments and other important documents remotely without the need of storing them in their hard drives. Professors will be able to work with students in showing them changes in documents for better understanding.

Both companies are glad this collaboration is taking place. As the words of Xythos’ CEO, Ed Miller outlines it, “The combination of Xythos and Zimbra technologies offers the advantage of Web-enabled service delivery without the intrusion of advertisements. The fact that organizations can better enforce policies and protect information while reducing their dependence on desktop applications should make this integration a compelling proposition.”

On the other hand, Zimbra’s CTO and President Scott Deitzen, expressed his enthusiasm to the collaboration, “We're pleased to partner with Xythos to give educational institutions an easier and more flexible means of accessing and managing their critical documents. Our mutual commitment to open standards enables rapid development of new experiences and allows schools focus on what's core to their IT strategy -- facilitating richer collaboration, not writing more code.”

As this collaboration will go full swing, users will be able to experience not only the e-mail service of Zimbra but also content management and collaboration with the use of Xythos. This signals a start of the Zimlets’ ability to show some changes in Zimbra and for good. As the forerunner of technology, Xythos has certainly opened doors for further development. Yahoo could never feel better with this development.
