Can someone explain CSS positioning to me?

Ok.I have a good understanding of CSS, I have been studying for basically 72 hours straight. Basically, it's getting really frustrating at this point because I can put stuff where I want, but I really don't have control over it.The only thing I know about positioning is float, and left and right for it. That's it. I know about clear but every explanation I read about clear is way too complicated.I also know about absolute positioning, but I know that's frowned upon in CSS development. So if I could get any explanations that make sense, or point me to an explanation that makes sense, that would be great.

Everyone was telling me to use CSS, the simple thing that nobody mentioned is that if your site has a lot of graphics and a little text here and there, there's no reason to use CSS in the first place. I've been designing sites for photographers so guess what! For the little bit of text I am using I have started learning Flash because it looks so much better and I have way more control!!!!
