Most efficient AJAX Refresh for a chat program?

Hey guy's, I'm constructing a dynamic community website with integrated flash and AJAX chat.

Here is my question:
What is the most efficient AJAX Refresh method?

I am trying to keep bandwidth in mind, and I figure that every single AJAX/client chat refreshing every 0.2 seconds multiplied by 1000 people would be a lot of data to keep requesting, yet alone the messages sent in that time-span.

What is the most efficient, fast way to go about doing this?

Right now, here's the flawed version of what I "Could" do:
Client Message -> Server side script -> database
^Checks every 0.2 seconds for new messages.
