New to Joomla - components don't install - No XML file?

I just downloaded JCal and am trying to set it up on my new Joomla page but there is no XML file in the folder, just PHP. This also is the case for other components I have tried installing. What can I do?Here's what the message says:ERROR: Could not find an XML setup file in the package.ALSO (sorry) I have downloaded a template for Joomla, edited it, put it bach as a ZIP and am ready to upload it but I get the message "Failed to move uploaded file to /media directory." although it says that /media is writeable. Why?
