Which to use: HTML or XHTML or XML?

I know HTML4.0, but have heard that XHTML and XML are going to be the slow but steady "wave of the future internet". I want to code a website but am not sure which to use, nor which ones are the most browser compatible or which is more versatile.I know HTML4.0, but have heard that XHTML and XML are going to be the slow but steady "wave of the future internet". If you are just starting out, you probably want to use HTML and CSS first. Afterwards, if you're feeling comfortable with a bit more, check out XHTML and XML.
