The $ at the end of a string indicates that this should be the end of the expression to look for... in other words, in the example you gave would match a file called index.xml, but would not match the file index.xmls

Probably a typo. The disallow line in the robots.txt file should specify the starting URL that a robot should not visit and it should either be in the form of /path/to/exclude or you can specify the terminating slash /path/to/exclude/. The only reason to have /index.xml$ would be if you actually had a file in the root directory of your server called index.xml$ with the trailing dollar sign as part of the filename.I have provided a link to the robots.txt spec for your perusal.
