How can I use DHTML and CSS to apply tiny images (.jpg or .gif) as bullet styles?

I have been having some trouble in Internet Explorer 6 & 7 trying to get this to work. I am aware that Microsoft bucks convention in my cases concerning CSS & DHTML, which means 'work-arounds' are required to accomplish many tasks, which would seemingly just work using Mozilla. For better or worse, I have no choice but to use IE. So, what I want to do, have tried, and have been unsuccessful thus far, is to implement several different bulleting styles in a given web page. One practical application of this would be to have a web page of html links, sorted by category; all the car related links would have a car as the bullet, all the financial links would use dollar signs, etc. I thank you in advance for your responses.
